Payroll Manager in Central Alberta!

The Opportunity

Our well established client in central Alberta is currently seeking a Payroll Manager to join their high-performance team. The Payroll Manager is primarily responsible to supervise the payroll team, ensure payroll is managed and processed efficiently and accurately within regulatory and company guidelines, and all reporting deadlines are met or exceeded.

Key Account Responsibilities and Functions

  • Oversee payroll administrators to ensure the accurate and timely completion of weekly and bi-weekly payroll for staff in both union and non-union, multi-provincial environments.
  • Ensure recognized payroll processes and procedures are in place.
  • Observe all payroll related activities; hiring, terminating, reconciling, reporting, remitting, leave accruals, benefit management, etc.
  • Review and approve all pre/post payroll reporting to ensure accurate time entry and inclusion of all payroll related requests.
  • Ensure all payroll changes are accurate, timely and approved; documentation and approvals obtained.
  • Create and maintain internal payroll policies, processes and checklists.
  • Review and approve payroll general ledger accounts; partner with accounting for resolution
  • Train, mentor and coach payroll team; perform performance reviews.
  • Create processes to ensure all year end payroll duties are completed accurately within timeframes.
  • Create payroll orientation packages; provide to branches; ensure mandatory paperwork is complete.
  • Perform all payroll system and reporting maintenance, updates, changes, corrections, etc.
  • Oversee personnel file management; ensure they are organized, contain mandatory documentation and are kept confidential; develop and maintain accurate records management system.
  • Ensure payroll, benefits and related HR records, both electronic and paper copies, are maintained in compliance with overseeing regulatory bodies including PIPA.
  • Certify payroll documentation and processes comply with Employment Standards, AIT, Human Rights, CRA, WCB and other regulatory bodies.
  • Liaise with external payroll related regulatory bodies including CRA, Unions, Service Canada, Benefits Providers, Employment Standards, WCB, etc.

Required Skills and Qualifications

  • CPM designation.
  • Minimum 10 years’ payroll experience in both union and non-union, multi-provincial environments, and a post-secondary diploma or degree in a related field.
  • Five years supervisory and mentorship experience; well-developed coaching and leadership skills.
  • Strong working knowledge of computerized payroll software applications.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of WCB, multi-provincial Employment Standards, CRA, Health and Dental benefits, RRSP, CRA, Human Rights, and all other payroll related regulatory bodies
  • Experience creating and implementing solid payroll processes, and internal checklists and controls.
  • Proven ability to build strong working relationships; commitment to internal and external customer excellence.
  • Experience working directly with HR and finance; strong accounting background as it relates to payroll and GL account reconciliation.
  • Strong command of the English language; clear written and verbal communication capability.
  • Knowledge of Canadian and Alberta Privacy laws; proven commitment to confidentiality.
  • Commitment to growth and learning through ongoing training.
