The Opportunity

Our client in downtown Calgary is looking for a Corporate Controller to provide leadership in the areas of internal accounting, financial reporting, internal controls and taxation among other areas critical to the ongoing growth and success of the Company. The successful candidate will report directly to the Chief Financial Officer and supervise a team of finance professionals.

Key Account Responsibilities and Functions

  • Advises clients on performance management, discipline, and termination procedures.
  • Active team member in evaluation of reports, decisions, and results of department to recommend.
  • Establish and document policies and procedures around key transactional processes within the organization.
  • Refine existing budgeting function to integrate with forecasting model in support of critical decision making.
  • Management of the finance function and overseeing the finance team.
  • Maintenance of financial ledgers and accounting processes, ensuring compliance with policies and procedures.
  • Ensuring that appropriate systems and internal controls are implemented and maintained (including the integrity of accounting records).
  • Represent the company as required with external stakeholders and at appropriate industry forums.
  • Maintain and manage relationship with internal and external stakeholders (including other members of management, insurance, financial institutions, auditors, tax agents).
  • Identify, initiate and implement business system improvement opportunities.
  • Develop and implement policies and procedures as required.
  • Negotiate working capital and banking facilities with financial institutions.
  • Ensure cash requirements are met (including foreign currency requirements).
  • Monitor debt levels and compliance with debt covenants.
  • Annual insurance renewals, ensure appropriate coverage for operations and certificates of insurance are issued as needed.
  • Develop, improve and issue timely statutory and internal financial and management reports.
  • Regular monitoring of actual results vs. budget and forecasts vs. prior period and investigation and explanation of differences.
  • Preparation of timely and complete internal and external financial reports for the company.
  • Preparation of schedules and reporting for delivery to external auditors for half year and year end audit.
  • Manage and co-ordinate the audit process.
  • Maintain proper reporting, compliance with banks, insurance companies or other financial institutions.
  • Coordinate and manage the production of annual budgets, regular and periodic forecasts and reporting to the corporate parent.
  • Provide financial modelling and analysis as required.
  • Providing analytical support for assessing various projects, reviews and initiatives including cost allocation, sensitivity analysis, costing improvements, capital project and new business ventures including potential acquisitions.
  • Preparation of annual income tax for external tax professionals.

  • Required Skills and Qualifications
  • University Degree in Business or Commerce
  • Professional accounting designation
  • 7+years of relevant experience
  • Experience in production accounting or mining accounting is preferred, in a public company setting
  • Experience with International Financial Reporting Standards
  • Experience in the development and implementation of systems and internal controls
  • Must have effective communication skills
  • Very Strong skills in accounting systems.
