Alberta: Continued Decline in EI Beneficiaries

Sep 19, 2013

The number of regular Employment Insurance beneficiaries continued to decline in Alberta in July. Statistics Canada said there were 28,700 EI beneficiaries in the province in the month, down 780 or 2.6% from June.

Calgary was up 1.8% from the previous month but down 2.7% from a year ago. Edmonton saw the reverse; EI beneficiaries in July were down 4.5% from June but up 1.9% from July 2012.

Across Canada, the number of regular EI beneficiaries fell 2.1%, or 10,900, in July to 503,920. This decline brings the number of beneficiaries to a level similar to that observed before the start of the labour-market downturn in 2008.
