Alberta: Unemployment Rate Down to 4.3%

Alberta’s unemployment rate dipped to 4.3% in September, down from 4.8% the previous month, and is tied with Saskatchewan for the lowest level in the country, says Statistics Canada.

The federal agency reported Friday that employment in Alberta rose by 4,000 positions, or 0.2%, from August while it grew by 3.7% or 80,300 positions year-over-year, which was the highest growth rate in the country.

In the Calgary census metropolitan area, the unemployment rate dropped to 4.7% in September from 5.0% in August. Employment grew by 1.0%, or 7,500 jobs, on a monthly basis and by 4.5%, or 33,500 positions, year-over-year.

In Canada, the unemployment rate declined 0.2 percentage points to 6.9%. It is the first time Canada’s unemployment rate fell below 7% since 2008.
