August unemployment numbers demonstrated resilience

Sep 10, 2012

The August unemployment numbers demonstrated the continued resilience of the Western Canadian provinces.  British Columbia reduced unemployment by .3 percent as both Alberta and Saskatchewan hit a new low at 4.4% for both provinces – the lowest in the country.  Eastern provinces, led by Ontario and Quebec maintained unemployment numbers at 8% and 7.6% respectively.

Changes in BC were minimal among the industries; however, Alberta gains were in full time and permanent employment.  Gains were in strong in the natural and applied sciences categories, while trades, transport and equipment operators category saw its first month to month declines this year, falling 8%.
