Number of EI beneficiaries down in September
Nov 21, 2013
Statistics Canada says the number of people receiving regular employment insurance benefits decreased in September by 1.4% compared with the previous month.
It says the number of beneficiaries was 503,800, about 7,100 fewer than in August and down 8.8% compared with September 2012.
Before the small decline, the number of EI beneficiaries had been relatively unchanged for three months. There were notable declines in Ontario and British Columbia, smaller drops in Saskatchewan and Alberta, and increases in Quebec, Manitoba and the Atlantic provinces.
However, the Calgary region bucked the national and provincial trend in September as the number of people receiving regular Employment Insurance benefits rose, according to Statistics Canada.
The federal agency reported Thursday that there were 10,030 people on EI in the Calgary census metropolitan area. That was up by 210 people, or 2.1%, from August and represented an increase of 350, or 3.6%, from a year ago.
In Alberta, the number of people on EI was 29,140, which was down 330, or 1.1%, from August and off by 590 people, or 2.0%, from last year.
